When you have a vehicle you know that you have to make sure it is taken care of to ensure that it stays running on the road. Sadly there are always things that will go wrong with the car and you will need to make repairs to keep it going. You also have to keep the car filled with the fluids that are needed such as radiator fluid, oil and gas. These are things that will need to be refilled and changed on a regular basis as part of the maintenance of the vehicle. When it comes to the gas you usually know how well your car does in terms of MPG. The miles that your car can go on a single gallon of gas is commonly asked when buying a car. The fact is that that manufacturer will say that the car will get a certain MPG’s but that only happens when you are running at optimum levels. There are other things that will take that number down. That is why you never want to run your car to empty because you cannot be sure how far you can really go when the gas light comes on. There are some things that you can do to conserve on gas if your gas light comes on and you want to make it to a gas station. Top Notch Body Shop & Mechanic outlines a list of ways you can conserve your gas.
Do Not Run Car Accessories
One of the mistakes that people will make when they are low on gas and want to conserve it is running the accessories such as the air conditioner. The problem is that the more you are running your air conditioner the less you will get out of your gas per gallon. The gas is something that will be used to not only run the engine but to run the other components that help to cool the car down as well. If you see that your gas light is on and you are not close to a gas station you may want to conserve what you have left. The gas that you have left will be used up faster with the AC running so that is why you should turn on the AC or the heater until you are able to get to a gas station.
Turn Off Car
You might be thinking that your car will only use gas when you are actually traveling but that is just not true. The car will use gas when the engine is running. This is good to know if you are trying to conserve on gas. You want to make sure that you do not leave the car running for any reason. If you are waiting outside of a friends house and they are not ready you want to shut the car off. The longer you let the car idle and sit the more gas it will use. It is best to get to a gas station and fill up so you are on stuck on the side of the road.
Slow Down when Running Out of Gas
You also want to make sure that you are not racing around to get to a gas station especially if you are low. The more efficiently you drive the car the less gas it will use. This is why you want to have smooth and even acceleration when you are driving. The more you rev up the engine to drive the more gas will be consumed.
Does Running Out of Gas Damage Fuel Injectors?
Even though loss of engine power causes hydraulic assist for the steering and brakes to stop, fortunately it will not cause damage to those components. However, running out of gas still could damage your car resulting in costly repairs. This is because whenever you run out of gas it can play havoc with your fuel delivery system. As your fuel supply runs out, there is less gasoline in the tank to cool and lubricate the fuel pump and it is very likely to overheat and fail or even worse if the fuel pump sheds debris that gets into your car’s fuel system and finds it’s way to one or more of your fuel injectors and damaging them.
