There are several dangers that are on the roads: that’s no secret. Some of the dangers are more obvious than others though. Sometimes, potholes can be a type of hidden danger that you don’t realize it there until you hit it. Hitting a pothole can be alarming if you don’t see it coming. Not only can it startle you, but it can also cause damage to your vehicle. There are several different ways that your vehicle can be damaged by a pothole. Top Notch Body Shop & Mechanic is here to talk about what can happen when you hit a pothole.
How Badly Can Potholes Damage Your Car?
Not all potholes are going to cause the same damage to your car. In fact, it is going to depend on the size of the pothole and the speed that you’re driving to determine how severe the damage actually is. Here are some parts of your vehicle that can get damaged if you hit a large pothole while driving fast enough.
– Tires: The tires are the most obvious part of your vehicle that can be damaged by hitting a pothole. If you hit it going fast enough, it can actually slice through the rubber and leave you stranded with a flat. Sometimes, it can cause a bubble bulge in the sidewall of your tire which puts you at extreme risk of a tire blowout.
– Wheels: The next thing to get damaged in the wheel your tire sits on. The wheel can get damaged when it hits the hard edge of the pothole and can get cracked, chipped, and even bent. If there are chips and cracks it will make it so that there isn’t a tight seal on your tire, and this will more than likely result in tire damage as well.
– Steering & Suspension: The suspension on your car helps give you a smooth ride as it absorbs all of the bumps in the road. However, a pothole can be jarring enough that your suspension is damaged as a result. This can cause problems with your steering as well if it isn’t fixed.
– Undercarriage: The undercarriage of your vehicle can also sustain damage when you hit a large enough pothole as well. While this is mostly cosmetic, this scrapes and scratches can turn into rusting issues if they aren’t fixed. Parts like your muffler, catalytic converter, and exhaust pipes can get damaged.
