No one wants to walk up to their car and notice that it has big scratches on it. Even small scratches can be frustrating for car owners. When you see scratches on your vehicle, it might not seem like a big deal to some, but leaving them without getting them fixed can lead to further damage to your vehicle. It is important to understand that not all scratches are the same though. Top Notch Body Shop & Mechanic is here to talk about the different types of car scratches and what can be done to fix them.
Types of Car Paint Scratches
It isn’t uncommon for cars to sustain scratches. Here is a closer look at the different types of scratches you might see on your vehicle:
– Clear Coat Scratches: When you have a clear coat scratch on your vehicle, you can rest easy knowing that this is the most surface level scratch you can get. Your vehicle has a clear, transparent layer of paint that protects your vehicle from deep scratches that can cause significant damage. These types of scratches can usually be buffed out and covered with just a little bit of clear nail polish to make them disappear. After the polish is applied, the area should be buffed again.
– Color Coat Scratches: The next layer after the clear coat is the color coat. Scratches in the color coat are deeper and more difficult to fix on your own. They are usually cause by things like tree branches, contact with metal objects, or even a collision with a bicycle. To fix these scratches, it will require a little more technical equipment to get the job done. The color of the car will have to be matched with color matching software. Once the touch up color is applied, the clear coat will also be applied. It can be difficult to buff this out if you aren’t familiar with how to paint a car.
– Primer Scratches: Under the color coat is the primer coat. If the scratch has reached this layer, it is quite deep. These scratches usually accompany dents and dings as well. There will more than likely need to be some dent repair done in conjunction with the painting to fix these scratches. Body filler will be needed, primer, color coat, and then the clear coat after that. There will be some specialized equipment that will be necessary to sand and buff the area before the repair gets started.
