Seeing the check engine light illuminating on the dashboard can arise many emotions to the surface, because when it comes on, it indicates there is a problem with the engine, ranging from mild to severe. When the light pops on, especially when you are driving to the next destination, many will get a little anxious. If there are any accompanying smells or sounds unusually manifesting, the light coming on can become overwhelming. At Top Notch Body Shop & Mechanic, our experts can run a diagnostic to find the underlying issue. Today, however, we would like to share the most common reasons as to why the check engine light has turned on.
Mass Air Flow Sensor Problems
The check-engine light can be an indication that something is affecting the mass airflow sensor. The mass airflow sensor is designed to measure the correct amount of air is entering to an engine. The fuel efficiency being reduced is a classic symptom because when the mass airflow sensor is not working properly the engine’s performance significantly drops due to the unmanaged airflow.
Evaporative Emission Control System Leak
To monitor the gasoline vapors from not exiting the gas time and fuel system or releasing into the air, the Evaporative Emission Control system (or EVAP) is in place. A simple issue can arise that affects the EVAP, such as faulty gas caps, broken valves, or leaking vacuum hoses and vents. However, if it causes the check-engine light to illuminate, the vehicle will need to be serviced.
Spark Plugs & Wires
Spark plugs and wires not effectively functioning will contribute to electrical problems that will set in motion the check-engine light. Spark plugs are often ignored, but they are an essential element to the vehicle’s electrical system and permanent damage to a vehicle’s catalytic converter can be the result. A few red flags of this is rough engine idling, engine misses or pings are produced, power losses and surges, and other such erratic engine performance. If the check-engine light comes on, it is best to get the problem resolved as quickly as possible to prevent expensive repairs.
Ignition Coil Wiring
Ignition coil issues is another likely source to check-engine light becoming lit. With the use of an electric current from the car’s battery, the ignition coils ignite the spark plugs. The electric current running through the car is disrupted should there be any impedance with the ignition coil. If this is the cause and you need professional care because the entire electrical system can be negatively impacted.
Oxygen Sensor Fail
The oxygen emissions levels need to be managed so that the vehicle’s engine to operate at maximum performance. To ensure that the correct ratio of oxygen and fuel are being pumped through the engine, the oxygen sensors gauge the gasses that leave the engine. The fuel economy of the vehicle drops, leading to the engine light to pop on when the ratio is imperfect.

A few other common reasons the check engine light comes on can be the vehicle’s battery, charging systems, and other underlying problems.
